  Today (July 21), according to "Samsung Semiconductor and Display Official" news, Samsung Electronics announced that it has successfully developed its groundbreaking second-generation SmartSSD (smart solid-state drive).


  According to reports, the new patented computing storage device integrates data processing functions in a high-performance SSD (Solid State Drive). Unlike conventional SSDs, Samsung SmartSSDs process data directly, minimizing data transfers between the CPU (Central Processing Unit), GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and RAM (Random Access Memory). This technology avoids the bottleneck that often occurs when transferring data between storage devices and the CPU, thereby significantly improving system performance and energy efficiency.


  Leveraging Arm cores and employing related intellectual property (IP) and software developed by customers, Samsung's second-generation SmartSSD enables more efficient data processing. Compared with Samsung's traditional data center SSD, the query time for heavy scanning of the database can be shortened by more than 50%, the power consumption can be reduced by 70%, and the CPU utilization rate can be as high as 97%.


  It is understood that in 2020, Samsung and AMD jointly developed the first-generation SmartSSD, which is now providing support for global IT service providers such as video communication platforms, and won the CES 2021 (International Consumer Electronics Show) Innovation Award ( Innovation Awards Honoree).


  Samsung Electronics said that through close cooperation with the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and NVM Express, it has actively participated in the standardization of SmartSSD technology, and is exploring more application possibilities for SmartSSD devices through technical verification.
