Costing US$244 million, STMicroelectronics expands SiC power device packaging capacity

Silicon carbide "getting on the car" has become a topic that new energy vehicles cannot avoid. Faced with this business opportunity, semiconductor companies have increased their strategic layout. Among them, STMicroelectronics recently opened a new SiC power device packaging production line.
It is reported that the factory where the new production line is located is located in Bosquekura, in the Casablanca-Sétat region of Morocco. The expansion, which cost $244 million, will expand the factory's existing production area by 7,500 square meters, making it the company's second-largest factory and a key component of ST's strategy to supply SiC devices to Europe.
In addition, STMicroelectronics has recently heard news that it will build a fab with GF. According to sources, GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics are considering cooperating to build a semiconductor wafer factory with the aid of the French government. It is speculated that the newly built fabs by the two parties may focus on chips required by industries such as automobiles.
At the same time, ST also signed a number of cooperation agreements in the first quarter of fiscal 2022, including a four-year technical cooperation with German module manufacturer SEMIKRON to jointly develop eMPACK power modules for electric vehicles. The module has been selected by a German OEM with a contract value of around 1 billion euros.
ST's silicon carbide products are progressing well and are now an important part of the company's revenue. According to its financial report, as of the first quarter of fiscal year 2022, the company's silicon carbide products have been tested in 98 projects from 75 customers, of which industrial applications and electric vehicle applications account for half.
STMicroelectronics expects revenue from silicon carbide products to be around $700 million in 2022, and this figure will reach $1 billion in 2024
