According to Taiwanese media reports, MediaTek's 5G data chips for vehicles have successfully entered the supply chains of European and Asian car brands.
The report pointed out that MediaTek will first use 5G data chips to integrate automotive product lines such as car networking and car communication and entertainment systems, and it is expected that mass production and shipments will begin in the second half of this year.
At present, with the rapid development of new energy vehicles and autonomous vehicles, MediaTek has also begun to enter the automotive chip market.
For the layout of the automotive market, MediaTek mainly focuses on two areas, one is the Internet of Vehicles TCU products extended by its own 5G communication technology, and the other is the intelligent cockpit platform (IVI) with multimedia and computing power.
In May of this year, Xu Jingquan, general manager of MediaTek's wireless communication division, said that the company's IoV products have received orders from many car manufacturers. It is expected that vehicles equipped with MediaTek's 5G chips will come out in the second half of the year and next year. This year, it will start from the Asian market. Enter the European and American markets again next year.
Although the automotive product line and special application chips (ASIC) currently account for less than 5% of MediaTek's revenue, there is a chance to grow by a single-digit percentage after automotive products start to ship in large quantities. Industry insiders pointed out that in the future, if MediaTek enters the car factory with self-driving technology, then the revenue will have the opportunity to increase rapidly.
