Recently, major semiconductor manufacturers have once again favored Malaysia, where Infineon and Bosch have invested in expanding production.

In the early years, Penang, Malaysia has become one of the world's top five electronics and semiconductor production centers, and it has an important position in the global semiconductor packaging and testing and passive components market. According to public data, in the first quarter of 2022 alone, the country has attracted US$4.4 billion in investment in the electronics and electrical sector, which has also become the strongest performing sub-sector in Malaysia’s manufacturing sector.

Infineon's third factory in Kulim laid the foundation stone to further expand power semiconductor production capacity in Malaysia

According to foreign media sources, Infineon’s third factory project in Kulim, Malaysia recently held a groundbreaking ceremony. The project has a total investment of more than 8 billion ringgit and will be used for the manufacture of third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide and gallium nitride products. It will be completed and put into operation in the third quarter of 2024.

Infineon Chief Operating Officer Rutger Wijburg, who attended the ceremony, said that the company's front wafer manufacturing base in the Kulim region has formed an advantage of scale. After the third factory is put into production, it will contribute 2 billion euros of new output value, which will also enable Infineon. Ling is better able to meet the growing demand for power semiconductors.

Bosch plans to invest another 3 billion euros in semiconductors

In addition, Bosch official sources show that Bosch plans to invest another 3 billion euros in its semiconductor division by 2026 as part of the IPCEI Microelectronics and Communication Technology Funding Program.

Currently, Bosch is building a new semiconductor testing center in Penang, Malaysia. By 2023, the center will be used to test finished semiconductor chips and sensors.

Bosch also plans to build two new development centers in Reutlingen and Dresden at a cumulative cost of more than 170 million euros. In addition, the company will spend 250 million euros over the next year on a new 3,000-square-meter cleanroom space at its fab in Dresden.

According to public information, Malaysia now has more than 50 semiconductor companies, such as AMD, ASE, Infineon, STMicroelectronics, Intel, Renesas, X-FAB and Texas Instruments, etc. The above companies all have manufacturing plants in the country or packaging and testing plants. In addition to international manufacturers, local packaging and testing factories in Malaysia also include Inari, Unisem, etc.
