Alphabet's Google Cloud announced on July 13 that it will use computing chips based on Arm technology, which means that it will seize market share from Intel and AMD and become a new pressure.

Google said the new product is based on Ampere Computing's "Altra" chip. Ampere Computing is a former Intel executive who mainly develops Arm-based server processors, and also sells chips to Microsoft, Oracle and other companies.

With cloud computing companies such as Amazon and Alibaba designing their own chips based on Arm, other companies such as Google have turned to cooperate with Ampere Computing.

Arm is a British chip company that has long provided the designs and other intellectual property that power smartphone and tablet chips. In 2018, Arm began to provide technology for data center chips, and the computing chip market is mainly dominated by Intel and AMD.

In the next four years, data centers around the world began to adopt Arm technology, including Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, and Chinese companies such as Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent.

These companies buy large amounts of computing chips and then rent out computing power to software developers through paid cloud computing services, but still offer services based on Intel and AMD chips. Almost every major supplier now has at least some Arm-based chips as Google joins the ranks of suppliers offering Arm-based cloud computing.
