The penetration rate of DDR5 in the memory market is rising. With the recent launch of AMD's new desktop CPUs and the upcoming launch of new DDR5 DRAM products from memory giant Micron, DDR5 will benefit from the PC and server markets, and its market share may further increase in the future.

AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors: full support for DDR5

On August 30th, AMD officially released the Ryzen 7000 series desktop processor products based on the new "Zen 4" architecture. .

The Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors are built with TSMC's 5nm process. Compared with the previous generation, the single-core performance has improved by 29%. The single-core performance of the four models listed on the market all exceeds the i9 12900k; the minimum is 6 cores and 12 threads, and the maximum is 16 cores and 32 threads. , the frequency is increased to 5.7GHz, the multi-core performance is increased by 35%, and the IPC is increased by 13%. It has up to 16 cores and 32 threads.

This series of processors uses AMD's new AM5 platform, supports PCIe 5.0 and DDR5, and uses the cooling bracket of the AM4 platform. It is worth mentioning that, unlike Intel’s 12th-generation Core processors, the Ryzen 7000 series fully supports DDR5 and no longer supports DDR4.

The industry believes that this move reflects AMD's confidence in the DDR5 market. At the same time, driven by AMD manufacturers, DDR5 is expected to develop rapidly in the PC market in the future.

At present, the frequency specification of DDR5 memory starts from 4800MHz. According to Robert Hallock, director of technical marketing of AMD, the default FCLK of Ryzen 7000 series processors is 1,733 MHz, and DDR5-5200 memory is supported by default, but the comprehensive cost, stability, performance, and availability And ease of use and other factors, Robert Hallock is optimistic about the application of DDR5-6000 in Zen 4 architecture processors.

Foreign media: Micron will sell DDR5 DRAM for servers

According to Korean media news, Sanjay Merotra, CEO of Micron Technology, recently stated that it will sell DDR5 DRAM for servers to enterprises.

At present, DDR4 is the mainstream memory product in the server and PC fields, but after the launch of DDR5, the performance of the server and PC fields will be greatly improved.

In early July this year, Micron announced that DDR5 can already support Intel and AMD's next-generation server and workstation platforms. Micron's DDR5-enabled servers are being evaluated and tested in the data center environment and are expected to accelerate adoption by the end of 2022. The initial data rate of DDR5 is 4800MT/s, which is twice as fast as the existing DDR4. Micron said this rate is expected to increase in the future to meet the demands of data center workloads.

Micron said that after entering the DDR5 era, the system performance is 85% higher than that of DDR4 DRAM. At the same time, new server DDR5 memory maximizes the performance of AI, HPC and data-intensive applications that require more CPU compute capacity and higher memory bandwidth than DDR4 technology.

In addition to AMD and Micron, the recent domestic storage company Montage Technology is also helping the development of DDR5. On September 1st, Montage Technology announced the release of engineering samples of the first-generation DDR5 clock driver (CKD or DDR5CK01 for short), which has been sent to mainstream memory manufacturers in the industry. The product will be used in the memory of next-generation desktop and notebook computers. .

The industry believes that the current price of DDR5 is still too high, which may limit the popularity of DDR5 to a certain extent. However, as manufacturers continue to make efforts and costs continue to decline, the penetration rate of DDR5 is expected to increase significantly in the future.
